Title: Study of Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from the Final Discharge PRASA's Miradero Facility

Duration: February 24, 2010 - June 30, 2011

Introduction
This project is a continuation of the study on the evaluation of options for the removal of heavy metals ions contained in the final discharge from the PRASA Miradero water facility to "Quebrada Pitillos". Dewatered sludges, generated in different PRASA-water facilities, will be sampled and their sorption capability for metal ions evaluated.

Objectives and Task
The project will explore the following main objective:
  1. To determine the sorption capability for metal ions of the dewatered sludges generated in different facilities of the PR Aqueducts and Sewer Authority.
The following activities will be accomplished along the period of this project.
  1. Sampling of dewatered sludges generated in different facilitie (three at least) of the Aqueducts and Seward Authority. The facilities to be visited will be selected in coordination with PRASA and CDM techincal staff.
  2. Morphological, structural, mineralogical, and quantitative characterization of sludge samples.
  3. Leachability (TCL tests) of sampled sludge.
  4. Sorption tests of heavy metal ions (Cu, Pb, Zn, others) using dewatered in coordination with CDM technical staff and according to the needs of each facility involved with this study.
