About me
Dr. Matías Cafaro is a Professor at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayagüez, where he has held various key academic and administrative positions, including Interim Coordinator for the Industrial Biotechnology Program and Associate Dean of Research at the College of Arts & Sciences. With a strong background in mycology, having earned his BS from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and a PhD in Botany from the University of Kansas, Dr. Cafaro has been an integral part of the UPRM faculty since 2005. His extensive research, particularly in the areas of bioremediation and microbial ecology, has been supported by organizations such as SeaGrant-NOAA, contributing to significant advancements in environmental science. Additionally, he has been actively involved in mentoring students, fostering their development through hands-on research experiences, and participating in the global mycological community, including roles as Congress Secretary of the International Mycological Congress and President of the Puerto Rico Mycological Society.
